Its almost over, theh evening are getting dark a slight chill can be felt during the days and October is almost over. Time to get the list of winter jobs updated and organise lift and storage or is it? Maybe jsut alittle longer, it could be time to fier up teh Webasto heating and get out in the solent as things start to quiten down, maybe even get into Bembridge without rafting up. Enjoy the rest of the season, keep chatting on the forum and maybe we should organise a solent get together for next spring. Happy sailing Jerry
For the first time ever I read my insurance renewal properly and boy am I glad but not glad I did!! I notice a line that stated that if my boat was over 20 years, which it is, I needed a survey not older than 5 years that i dont. So one week later and £210 poorer Ive have the news, and boy is it scary. After 21 years of abuse thousands of pounds spent on maintainance the only essential work is replacing 2 fire extinguishers.
Well that was a stroke of good luck. It was forecast to be far to windy to drop the mast at the W/E so I didn't! That means I can follow my family motto once again "don't do today what you can put off till tomorrow".
Well maybe just a little. This weekend the mast has to come down, unfortunately no crane is available so its all hands to and lets hope for the best. I have a cunning plan and will let you know how it goes. Mind you I'm sure there's a saying about the best laid plans of men or something!
How on earth is anyone able to work outside in this weather? I have loads of jobs to do but first I will need to chip the boat out of the ice cube engulfing it.
I have to admit that deep down I love this time of year. The boat is like a gardeners potting shed or a mechanics workshop; a place to hide, work, ponder life's big questions and make things better for next year.
When it comes to jobs I have to admit to being a bit sad, I have a list on the computer that gets pasted and updated from year to year and any outstanding jobs can be carried forward. The only problem seems to be that certain grotty jobs get carried over year after year and never actually get completed. Maybe I should stop fooling myself and just delete them!!!!!
Hope you all had a great 2008 and here's looking forward to a great sailing year Jerry
Well Highly Sprung was lifted yesterday so for me the sailing season is officially over. It all seemed so short this year. Before I get going with layup let me tell you about Dartmouth Regatta. The Tuesday evening after the August Bank holiday saw my brother and I set off for a non stop sail to Dartmouth. Overnight all went well motor sailing into a F4 slamming our way past Portland bill as the first signs of dawn appeared. Just after that the oil alarm on the trusty 1GM10 sounded and on inspection the oil was right on the bottom of the dip stick. Not to worry I had spare oil, OK all I actually turned out to have was a teaspoon full so we sailed the rest of the way saving the engine for the last part. At last we arrived after 25 hours of dullness.
Still all that wind will make for four days of great sailing- Oh no it wont, what greeted us was four days of no wind during which we finished one and a half races. One day we tried to get to the windward mark, spending two hours within 100 yards but never beating the tide and actually getting there!.
Disappointed on Sunday afternoon I left on my own headed for Weymouth and then home with a forecast of force 7 later. Dartmouth to Weymouth only took nine hours and with an early start next day I beat the wind and was tied up back at Itchenor by 4pm all that was left was to stick the boat back on the mooring which was followed by rolling the dinghy, submerging the outboard and a desperate swim pulling the dinghy upside down to a muddy shore followed by a paddle accross the harbour to arrive at the car wet and tired. You live and learn! luckely I lived and hopefully Ive learned.
Now I must nip to the boat, Im sure I can find some way of avoiding starting all thosejobs
Well its official the MG Spring 25 makes a great caravan! This years holiday plan started as a week doing the Normandy coast and somehow ended up as a week parked in Bembridge (Isle of Wight). In my defence I did manage to sail all the way from Chichester and back again a week later, in between we parked up, plugged in the electrics and enjoyed a lazy week with the kids, doing almost nothing. The spring really does make a great caravan but a much better sailing boat-so next week its of to Dartmouth for the Dartmouth Regatta hoping to beat our fourth in class of last year. Its a great four days of racing and I'll fill you all in on my return. http://http://www.dartmouthweek.com/
Well here we go, having talked about it for so long I have at last set up a spring web site. The Round the Island Race is a week away, I scrubed my bottom and all is ready to go. A great entry with 5 Spring 25's in ISC and one in IRC. Heres to a great weekend. Cheers all Jerry
